How did CHS contribute to your success or prepare you for the leader you are today?

CHS is at the core of where I am today as a leader, team member, and business owner—though if you’d asked me back then, I might have said something different.
Growing up in Canby, I was convinced that after high school, I’d head straight for a corporate job in the Twin Cities. Moving back to a rural community? No way. If you’d told 18-year-old me I’d be building a business in a small town, I’d have laughed. Rural areas didn’t seem to have much to offer, or so I thought.
Fast forward 16 years, and let me just say—I was very wrong. I was brought back to Canby by a “career detour”. On my 25th birthday, I learned the company I worked for went bankrupt and I was unemployed. Some people have mid-life crises; I had a quarter-life crisis! I packed up and moved home. With bills to pay and no income, I began freelancing for ag cooperatives in the surrounding areas. What began as a temporary side gig turned into a full-service marketing agency, serving agri-businesses, community banks, and rural businesses across the region.
That time was stressful, but the values I learned at CHS and from growing up in our rural corner of the world—sense of community, integrity, resilience, hard work, and a healthy dose of grit—helped me turn a challenging situation into something great. These were values I saw every day from my parents, teachers, coaches, and community members, and I still draw on them today as a leader, business partner, and teammate.

Do you think school activities have a role in student success?

YES! Extra-curricular activities are sneaky little life lessons in disguise. They teach leadership, teamwork, time management, working through adversity, goal setting, and how to develop positive mental habits. They’re also a great opportunity to explore interests and discover new talents. All are important life skills!

If you could go back and change one thing about high school or college, what would it be?

I’d tell myself to stress a little less about being perfect. Failure and loss are great teachers, but back then I was too busy worrying about acing every test and avoiding any missteps. If I could go back, I’d remind myself that it’s okay if things don’t go according to plan—sometimes, that’s where the best lessons and opportunities come from.
I’d also tell myself to take a few more risks, say yes to more opportunities, and not sweat it when things don’t work out. Every bad choice, awkward moment, or failed attempt ends up being a stepping stone. Plus, they make for great stories later!

Any suggestion on how a current student could prepare for their future career?

1. Get involved! Find a way to get hands on experience in your chosen profession whether it is through an internship, volunteering, job shadowing, etc.
2. Build Relevant Skills: Whether it’s technical expertise, communication, or project management, identify the skills that are valued in your chosen profession. Take advantage of school resources, online courses, or workshops to sharpen these abilities early on.
3. Develop a Professional Online Presence: In today’s digital world, having a LinkedIn profile or portfolio website can make a strong impression. Highlight your experiences, skills, and accomplishments, and use these platforms to connect with professionals in your field.
4. Seek Out Mentors: Find a teacher, counselor, or professional who can guide you. Mentors offer valuable advice, share industry knowledge, and help you navigate your path toward career success.
5. Stay Curious and Keep Learning: The job market is always evolving, so staying updated on industry trends and new technologies is crucial. Read industry-related articles, attend webinars, and always look for ways to grow both academically and professionally.
